Broken Hopes, Oslo's legacy

Web documentary on 20 years of the Oslo Accords. AFD Nikon Award 2013.

Twenty years after the Oslo Accords, the handshake between Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin in Washington remains a powerful image in our collective memory. Once a symbol of hope for lasting peace, that historic handshake now stands, for most analysts, for failure, and for a deep social and economic decline for Palestinians.

In 1993, the signing of the Oslo Accords raised immense hope: that the existence of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights would be recognised. BROKEN HOPES | Oslo’s legacy looks at the fragmentation of the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the West Bank, and at the many barriers and restrictions imposed on Palestinians since Oslo: checkpoints, the closure of Jerusalem, continued settlement, the separation wall… Restrictions that cut Palestinians off from their fields and pastures, water, basic services, markets, family, and social ties in general.
